Where My Footsteps Have Been And A Little Giveaway.

Footsteps on ancient  land. Wiltshire my birth place and home county.

Land of magic, standing stones, Avebury, Stonehenge, Silbury hill, crop circles, chalk hill horses and Moonrakers. Where the landscape is strong with the smell of cut corn, hay and farms.

If you stop, be still and really listen, there are voices, memories and secrets blowing on the wind with the whispering sea of grass.

And when you look closely between the grass, there are jewels to be found.

And when you look above it there are the friendliest of faces.

Today I left my home land for a trip across the border into Gloucestershire, to another equally magical place.
My feet walked pathways that Romans, JRR Tolkien and Dr Who had trod. An enchanted forest.
Follow me and tread the path of Puzzlewood.

Have we have wandered straight into the pages of Middle Earth? All is quiet, the wind is gentle on the leaves but the trees creak. Could they be Ents and will they start moving their rooted feet?..
Everything is clothed in a cloak of moss. Rocks, cold stone, frozen in time.
  A Greening place.
Mysterious, magical, A fairy tale land.

The air is clear and the branches are decorated.

A labyrinth of secret passageways. I was careful not to stray from the path.

Do the ferns and spiders webs hide an entrance somewhere to an elven home?

Is it this way?
Or across here?

A storyland of pathways, I could have stayed all day. My photographs do not do this place justice. It is truly another world. You can read more about it here and I found two wonderful film clips on You Tube which capture the essence of the place if you are interested in seeing more.

Now it's time for a little celebration. Lately I've noticed that the numbers of followers have been steadily going up, so to show my appreciation, I think it's time for a little giveaway!
Not wanting to waste anything, recently I've begun using the small scraps of wood and turning them into necklace pendants. This one is forest inspired and will be the giveaway prize.

All you have to do is be a follower and leave a comment. The lucky one picked out on Monday 2nd August will win the necklace.

  11. A magical wood, for sure... and I have seen little lights like the ones on your pendant, one time camping near a lake... I was sitting by the fire when all of a sudden the stars were in the branches. I was disoriented as it seemed the night sky had come forward. After a few moments I asked my friend if she saw it and she said no. The, pretty quickly, they were gone.... ?

  14. I agree that Wiltshire is magical. I visited a few years back and I have felt homesick for it ever since. I think I have lived there in a past life. I loved the grass when it would roll in a wave across the hills. How I miss it. And your pictures of this magical forest are stunning!

  23. What a lovely post - I have popped over via Dan's blog at frogs, dogs and ferns and fallen in love with your blog. I lived in the Forest of Dean as a child - it was my mother's birthplace and childhood home too not far from Coleford in Cinderford and am currently writing up some of my memories especially of the years we lived there. Those photos are stunning and I felt as if I'd been with you on your walk. That little pendant is beautiful and I love that it is made from wood which would otherwise be wasted, very green! Do you sell your work? If not you certainly should.

I am adding your blog to my list today.

  31. Hello!
I've been calling for a while, admiring your wonderful, gentle paintings and your writing.

Love the look of Puzzlewood — it reminds me of a magical but mysterious place right up in the north of California, called Fern Canyon, in giant redwood country. Beautiful.

I'd love to be in the drawer for the pendant - fingers crossed!

  32. What a wonderful post! Yesterday we took two 8 year-olds to the park in Lancaster to watch Peter Pan played by the Dukes Theatre Players. It started in the early evening and moved from site to site in the park and as the dusk fell the sites became more believable and we became part of the lost boys! Your photos of the woods made me think of how many stories we have that come from our woods....Narnia, Tolkien,B. Potter to name a few. They are places of magic, mystery and miracles! Thankyou for this lovely post.

  46. Hi Karen, I so love the things you make, you are very talented. I especially love your silver hares and moons because they are so dainty, but I do also have an affinity with Magpies (and crows too), for their sheer cheekiness. I do wish I had a gift such as yours and could make such beautiful and delicate things, I do try but am more a bull in a china shop than actual artist! Thank you for sharing your beautiful surroundings with us on Moonlight and Hares, I only discovered you because of this name! Working and living in London I do yearn for the countryside (I grew up in Kent). Thank you also for posting what tracks you are playing on the site as I really love some of this music. Until the next time, enjoy your summer and I look forward to your next inspiration. Take care Amanda xx

  57. I like your home county! With its fields it ressembles mine... What a nice idea to take us to these journeys. Thanks - I will learn a lot! The Puzzlewood is a magical place, no doubt. Even for a person like me, in whose native folklore there're no fairies and elves, it's a little bit scaring and at the same time so tempting, full of whispers and giggling, sounds of wings and tiny steps... Wonderful pictures of those leading-to-somewhere paths, waiting for your footsteps. And the pendant is soaked with mystery... I'm going to sleep now. What am I going to dream?:))
