Stone And Light

Yesterday was too beautiful a breezy day to stay indoors, so we walked among Aveburys ancient stones instead...
Can you see the faces in them? Each stone has a face somewhere, if you look hard enough. Some are easy to see, as the one just above. Sometimes I like to imagine that each one is a person or animal, hidden, frozen in time. I imagine them awakening and dancing in their circle.
(Now that could be a painting to put in my sketchbook! ;) )

Outside the trees are still holding on to their leaves.

And inside the light is a silken veil.

I was hoping to share three new hearts here today, but they will have to wait as it is just so dark outside. Much too dark and rainy to photograph anything. So I'll be back maybe tommorow or Sunday?
Enjoy your weekend. x

  2. You know, I've got a feeling I took a picture of that last stone with the face in black and white about 15 years ago! It looks very familiar!
Look forward to seeing your latest hearts...

  3. I love the idea of them coming to life...maybe on a full moon or a solstice, in the middle of the night.

  5. Avebury is a wonderful place. I enjoy the softer/gentler feeling when compared to stonehenge not too far away. It may sound a little strange considering some of the Avebury stones are huge but I am sure anyone who takes a walk around will know what I mean.

It has been too many years since I have been there and the photos have brought back fond memories. Thanks for taking the time to put them on your blog.

  11. Oh, now I love the tall stones... I can;t WAIT to visit them sometime! And I see faces in everything, even the negative spaces between leaves organizes itself in face forms for me. I see them as spirits looking at me and I usually greet them.

The photo of the light shining through the window is beautiful. The trees here are almost bare... some holding on, but many on the ground. It feels like snow tonight!

  13. What a nice place to visit, thank you! I saw faces in the stones at once... I suppose it's much more exciting when you see them closer and touch them! I'd love to see your sketches...
In my town Autumn hasn't shown its entire glory yet, so I hope many beautiful, golden days are here to come!

  14. My husband gave me a choice of visiting Avebury or Stonehenge on our trip to England earlier this year. I chose Avebury and have never regretted my choice. Just to be able to walk up to the stones was such a thrill.

  15. I love the stone people at Avebury. There's a book by Terence Meaden called 'secrets of the Avebury stones' Which has dozens of photos of the faces, and other simulacra too. Don't know if you know it. Your pics have a lovely autumn softness.
    Thanks....M

Rather spooky, or maybe I'm just in a Halloween mood.
